Smoothing Compounds: Types & Purposes

Ryan Gerrard / 19 January 2023

Whether you are working on a new build or refurbishment construction project, as a contractor, you know first-hand the importance of having a well-prepared base in order to achieve a flawless finish. Smoothing compounds, commonly referred to as "self-levelling compounds" or “floor screeds” are used in the preparation of laying most floor coverings to create a smooth and level surface. This not only enhances the overall aesthetic of the project, but it also ensures that the surfaces are durable and long-lasting.

There are several different types of smoothing compound available, each with their own specific purpose and characteristics. Some of the most common types include:

  • Two Part Latex Underlayment - general purpose, high performance, and Moisture tolerant grades
  • Water Mixed Underlayment's - hand or pump applied for heavy-duty applications
  • Repair Compounds - patch repair and feather edge compounds for specialist applicators
  • Specialist Floor Screeds - fibre-filled pumpable underlayment for flexing subfloor or difficult substrates

Smoothing compounds are used for a variety of different purposes, including:

Creating a level base for floorcoverings

The smoothing compound helps to create a smooth, even, and stable subfloor for the floor covering to be installed on. Smoothing compounds are often used prior to the installation of floor coverings such as Vinyl sheet or tiles, wood, or carpets.

Repairing damaged or uneven floors

Smoothing compounds can be used to repair damaged or uneven floors, filling in any low spots or imperfections in the surface. They are particularly useful in cases where the existing surface is uneven or damaged.

Preparing surfaces for the installation of floor coverings

Smoothing compounds can be used to prepare surfaces for the installation of floor coverings such as Vinyl, tiles or wood, creating a smooth and even base for the materials to be installed on.

Protect the flooring

Latex and water mixed underlayment’s used in conjunction with a surface Damp proof membrane (DPM) or Moisture Vapour suppressant provide both protection from moisture and can give you a level finish. The use of the surface damp proof membrane within the system helps control the passage of moisture and

can help to prevent the growth of mould and mildew that can be harmful to both the floor covering and the overall health of a building.
