Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Leighton Hospital

A construction project is only as successful as the products and systems that are used. When a completely new flooring system was required for a refurbishment project at Leighton Hospital, Tremco was in pole position to fulfil the needs of the Client, Axiom Group (NW) Limited, with their fully compatible solutions offering.

The Project

Positioned within Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the now 50-year-old Leighton Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment scheme to maintain their commitment to the safety of staff, patients, and visitors.

Aside from a much wider overhaul of the site’s current infrastructure, Tremco was called upon to install a number of their market-leading flooring products for the periodic refurbishment of one of the hospital’s buildings.

The Solution

A brand of Tremco CPG UK, Tremco was selected by the Client as their range of flooring solutions were deemed the most appropriate for the project. Tremco has a rich experience in offering contractors, specifiers, and architects fully compatible systems that generate results, having been the UK’s preferred choice for flooring innovations for more than 75 years.

When working with Tremco, our customers receive access to more than just products. Our team of experts are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to offer practical advice on the best approach to today’s complex and unique construction environments.

Due to this particular building’s change of use, a whole new flooring system was required. Through an already well-established relationship with Axiom Group, Tremco also worked in conjunction with Robertson Construction and Kenwood Flooring, who through collaboration, accomplished a safe, reliable, and high-quality installation that was suited to the building’s new purpose.

The Application

Once the floor was initially ground by Kenwood Flooring, then came the all-important installation of the liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM), which is one of the most vital stages of any flooring project. By applying a surface DPM that bonds to the surface of the concrete, this strives to minimise any moisture vapour transmission. This ultimately prevents moisture build-up beneath floor coverings, which in turn mitigates the risk of a floor failure.

Tremco’s ES100 is the UK’s market-leading epoxy DPM, and a single coat of this solution accommodates up to 97% relative humidity (RH). Having been developed for use on both concrete and sand/cement subfloors, ES100 is a cost-effective choice as it guarantees a single coat liquid application, thus significantly reducing time spent on site.

The next stage of the project saw the application of Tremco’s CS190 Gritty Primer, which is a ready mixed, rapid drying solution that can be used on both dry absorbent and non-absorbent substrates. CS190 provides a textured finish that significantly improves adhesion and bond strength, which creates an ideal surface for the application of a smoothing compound. The smoothing compound of choice was SX302, which is a moisture-tolerant latex underlayment that may accept foot traffic after just 90 minutes, post application. This product is both easy-to-mix and apply, promising extremely low odour, therefore, leaving no unpleasant scent of ammonia behind.

Lastly, Tremco’s SF105 High Performance Acrylic Adhesive was applied over the smoothing compound to achieve a strong, permanent bond to the subsequent floor covering. This non-flammable adhesive has been specially developed for linoleum and vinyl floor coverings, having been approved by major manufacturers for use with all vinyl (PVC) floor coverings.

Mark Bradley, Technical Expert for Tremco, commented: “It was a pleasure to work with Axiom Group on this refurbishment project at Leighton Hospital, which enabled us to fully utilise the versatile capabilities of a Tremco flooring system.

“It is through many years of innovation, rigorous testing, and listening to customer feedback that has led contractors, installers, architects, and specifiers to place their continued trust in Tremco. “We are proud to offer our customers with a full suite of services that encompasses a specialist range of high quality, affordable flooring solutions, as well as technical advice to select the right system for your installation, or even simply directing you to an approved Tremco distributor.”
