Bangor University enlisted the help of TREMCO to help restore a defective roof, which was allowing water to leak into a room causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The defective roof is an inverted roof that is above the critical research areas of the university. Not only was it critical to repair the roof as quickly as possible, it was essential that a solution was found that could accommodate the rapidly changing weather that is found on the Menai Straits.

Located at the foot of Snowdonia National Park, Bangor University needed a waterproofing solution that was not only fast curing but also a robust and proven solution, given the potential for extreme weather conditions.

TREMCO recommended their MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System. The system has a cure time of just 30 minutes and so was the perfect solution to use given the changeable weather conditions. With the short curing time, it had the additional benefit of minimising any disruptions to the university.

Although a straight forward project in many ways, TREMCO’s Technical Services team were on hand to answer questions and provide support during the project. Area Sales Manager, Mike Purcell visited the site to on several occasions to provide support to the contractors.

Two years after TREMCO’s CP Urethane Waterproofing was applied to the top deck of Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s multi-storey car park. A second treatment of TREMCO’s polyurethane system has also been applied to the remaining internal decks.

Specialist installer, Thelwell Flooring, applied the original waterproofing system to the exposed top deck, comprising CP171 Urethane Concrete Primer, CP350 Urethane Base Coat and CP951 Urethane Sealer with a medium-fine quartz sand aggregate for the wearing surface.

The five internal decks initially required no waterproofing, but after 24 months of service, it was decided to apply TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Internal Decking System to provide a hard-wearing, dust-free surface.

The products chosen for this phase were TREMCO’s CP150 MMA Concrete Primer fully broad-cast with medium-fine quartz sand which was then topped with CP900 Dry Chemical Sealer, two-component top coat.

CP150 is a two component product consisting of CP150 resin and CP510 initiator for priming porous surfaces prior to the application of a TREMCO MMA Rapid Cure Waterproofing System. Fillers and medium-fine sand may also be added when using as a high-build primer. CP150 has a curing time of approximately 30 minutes and can be applied at temperatures as low as -10°C.

CP900 Dry Chemical Sealer is a fast curing top coat which, when applied on top of CP150 MMA Primer and aggregate, the system can be open to vehicular traffic within two hours of application.

The biggest challenge with this project was that the car park was already in use and had to remain in use throughout the contract. The client had allowed 10 weeks for the work, calculating that Thelwell Flooring would have to complete each deck in two stages, leaving half of the space open to users at all times. In conjunction with the client, a solution was found which halved the installation time.

The ground floor was sub divided so that it could remain in use at all times and one whole deck was completed at a time. The use of TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Internal Decking System helped Thelwell Flooring make good time and hand back deck areas quickly, thanks to its rapid curing features. Also used on this project was TREMCO’s Hydrospan waterproof movement joint.

This cost-effective, bonded in closed-cell foam product is another example of a combined systems offer from TREMCO which effectively becomes one complete tremco illbruck system for the installer and client. This single sourced solution as specified based upon product performance and the NHS Trust visited other completed TREMCO projects to inspect the durability of the proposed system. The project was completed a head of schedule and is now in regular use again.

Most projects have challenges and this project was no different. With just a 3 week turnaround time, the completion of the Co-op car park in Jersey was completed using TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System.

Although completed in August, it is impossible to guarantee the weather and so when combined with the project’s other requirement of a fast turnaround time, it was decided that TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System provided the client with the best solution. This system has a cure time of just 30 minutes and can allow areas to be returned to use after 3 hours, providing the client with the reassurance that they needed.

A further benefit of the system, especially in areas that will receive a large amount of footfall is the addition of aggregate which when embedded in the system means that it has an extremely low potential for slip.

As part of the waterproofing work, the Cooperative Society for the Channel Islands decided that they would review the layout of the car park to try and accommodate more car parking spaces. The MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System is available in a range of colours to assist with improvements to the surfaces layout.

The benefits associated with using TREMCO’s MMA system mean that it has been used on many projects. It was TREMCO’s previous track record and well documented product performance that resulted in the system being specified for the project.

TREMCO provide on-site training which was re-enforced with an applicator pack, a detail pack of information which covers everything from product data, mixing ratios, storage recommendations and mixing instructions to application instructions and phase sign off documentation.

TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible Deck Waterproofing System has enabled specialist installer, Thelwell Flooring, to complete a challenging car-park refurbishment project on the Channel Island of Guernsey.

The Trafalgar Court multi-storey car-park in St Peter Port serves staff employed by Northern Trust, a major offshore financial institution.

Built only 12 years ago, the car-park’s original top deck waterproofing system has steadily deteriorated over the years until it reached a stage where water penetration to below areas became intolerable to the users.

Following a site visit from TREMCO specialists, approved installer Thelwell Flooring was appointed to carry out the work. It was a very challenging project as all of the old surface had to be stripped out right back to the bare concrete, and then the surfaces had to cleaned and prepared.

The split-level roof presented a multitude of difficult details, with penetrations within drainage gulleys and upstand flashings to accommodate. An added frustration was unseasonably wet weather during last year’s summer, when the work was carried out.

Time was a major factor as the car-park had to be closed during the work and alternative parking found by the client’s staff. The weather also threatened to delay completion of the contract significantly.

Despite these challenges, Thelwell Flooring completed the installation and handed the project over before the autumn weather closed in.

TREMCO’s rapid-curing methyl methacrylate (MMA) formulation is invaluable in projects like the Trafalgar Court car park where speedy completion is required under difficult environmental conditions.

It can be applied in temperatures as low as freezing and it cures so rapidly that the surface can be trafficked within four hours of application.

An inherently flexible material, the MMA formulation is applied in combination with a fleece reinforcement to help withstand high levels of structural movement.When applied in trafficked areas, such as carpark decks, a hard aggregate can be incorporated to cope with the high wear imposed by vehicle movements.

A typical MMA car-park system, as applied at Trafalgar Court, comprises a coat of TREMCO’s CP150 primer followed by CP581 reinforcing polyester fleece laid between two coats of CP360 MMA flexible membrane.

On top of this, a CP215 flexible base coat with an aggregate blind is applied and the system finished with TREMCO’s CP930 coloured sealer.

Due to the busy nature of this car park, the project needed to be carried out in phases with each area requiring a fast turnaround to restore it to use. With a cure time of 30 minutes, TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Curing Flexible System was used.

The existing waterproofing was badly eroded by traffic, especially in high wear areas of ramps, spiral access ramps, turning areas and hammerheads. In these areas the existing system was removed by planing and vacuum recoverable blast tracking before the installation of TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System.

All client’s needs are different and for this particular project it was essential that a rapid curing, robust and durable system was specified. The benefit of using TREMCO’s MMA system is not limited to the rapid curing properties associated with it. The system can be applied in temperatures as low as freezing which given the unpredictable nature of the UK’s weather, can help prevent delays on site. Additionally, each layer chemically fuses to the next, reducing the chance of de-bonding, even after prolonged periods of time, offering a robust solution for building owners and operators.

Projects do not always go to plan and TREMCO were able to offer a number of solutions to problems that Absolute Asset Holding Ltd. Due to logistical reasons it was to remove and replace an area of asphalt waterproofing. TREMCO offered a solution whereby the asphalt was repaired and then coated in the MMA Flexible system to match the rest of the project.

Some of the existing joints which had been previously repaired and dimensioned by installation of back to back metal angles with a sealant had failed. TREMCO were asked to provide a solution, which comprised the Hydrospan closed cell foam profile bonded in place with epoxy adhesive. This provided a cost-effective and practicable solution for the client.

Before the project commenced, TREMCO provided on-site training to the contractor. TREMCO’s AREA Sales Manager, Peter Bitten and Technical Services team member, Brett Varnam were on hand throughout the project to answer any questions that the contractor had

tremco illbruck were asked to waterproof the roof deck of a multi storey car park storage facility of lightweight construction at Southampton Dock. The facility is designed as a holding area for cars for export by ship which are delivered to the docks by rail transporter.
The MSCP is constructed out of steel frame and pre-cast planks that are grouted together and are subject to high levels of movement. The requirement was for a highly elastomeric and robust system
that could provide a durable solution. CP350/CP951 PU System was specified as a result of the elastomeric membrane layer which ensures the system can cope with vertical and horizontal movement.
The client was comfortable using the system as it had already been used on two other buildings, the 4th facility and the Itchen car storage facility.

The 15-storey Bittoms MSCP in Kingston upon Thames town centre was refurbished with a total of 18,000 m² of internal deck coating to lightly brush-finished concrete which had never previously been coated.
Rarely for the UK, the car park had a “wrinkly tin” roof so there were no external decks. The main criteria were protection of the concrete surface against ingress of water-borne contaminants (i.e. road de-icing salts trafficked in off the road by vehicles), aesthetic upgrade of the car park, and fast-track installation to minimise downtime in this busy car park.
The TREMCO Rapid Cure MMA internal deck system was selected following it’s proven track record on projects such as the award-winning MSCP 3 and also MSCP 1 at Gatwick Airport South Terminal.
The lower 4 levels were carried out first and handed back to the client as they were completed after 2 weeks.
The whole car park was completed in a 6-week contract period.

A busy city centre multi-storey car park in Yorkshire has undergone a two-phase refurbishment programme to upgrade and weather-proof its top deck; with the MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System from TREMCO being preferred by the specialist contractor involved.
The contract was carried out over a four week period, with PBM ensuring customers continued to have safe access to one half of the 100 plus parking bays at all times. PBM were keen to use the MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System due to the tricky nature of the project and based on previous experience, they know that the product is easy to apply and reliable.
The top deck to the Furnival Gate MSCP featured an ageing polyurethane running surface which was leaking water though to the lower decks. The product was applied with a grey finish to the aisle ways and ramps while the parking bays were
finished in green.
The project was a success and was supported throughout by the TREMCO area sales manager and the technical services department.

The four internal decks of MSCP 3 at the short-stay parking at Gatwick Airport South Terminal were coated with TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System as part of a major refurbishment.
Decades of road de-icing salts being trafficked into the structure had led to high chloride levels in the concrete leading to reinforcement corrosion and concrete deterioration. Extensive concrete repairs were carried out followed by electro-chemical remedial measures. This involved installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system to the lowest two levels, where the chloride levels were highest and application of a surface applied migratory corrosion inhibitor to the upper two levels.
Following the concrete refurbishment works, the deck coating systems were applied throughout.
The project was winner of the 2005 BPA ‘Best Refurbushment’ Award.

Car park comprises asphalt surfaced ground floor podium deck with office above and ramp down to basement levels.
Scheme was to prevent water leaking into the levels below which was leading to loss of parking spaces which had to be coned off to prevent damage to vehicles caused by salt-laden water. There was also a potential problem of long-term damage to the reinforced concrete caused by the water ingress. The use of protective decorative coatings also gave an upgrade to the aesthetics of the car park.

Matrix Solutions won the contract for the refurbishment and rebranding of the car park on the basis of a value engineered solution using high-performance TREMCO systems.
The systems were tailored to meet the different requirements of various parts of the structure; in high-demand areas such as the spiral ramps, a crushed basalt aggregate was used to meet the increased wear and traction demands. On the roof decks an elastomericcrack-bridging system was used to meet the demands of thermal and other cyclic movement; CP470 was applied to soffits to improve light levels and provide an effective anti-carbonation treatment to prevent concrete degradation.
The works were part of a package of measures to upgrade the car park to maximise usage through its location as
the most convenient parking for the flagship John Lewis store for which it has been
re-branded to serve.


This project was named “Best Car Park Refurbishment of the Year” and overall
winner at the British Parking Awards.

Livery Street MSCP was selected by Birmingham City Council as their flagship refurbishment to start the revamp of their city centre MSCPs. The car park is located in the heart of the city and is integrated with Snow Hill train station making it a key hub.
The car park is a 3-storey post-tensioned concrete structure that had never been coated. The project was therefore to coat the structure to protect and enhance it.
Following a process conducted by consultant WS Atkins, the contractor Balvac was selected to apply TREMCO MMA Rapid Cure Systems. The £700k project was carried out from October-March with a break to prevent disruption during the peak Christmas shopping period.
Work was carried out in phases to minimise loss of parking spaces and the rapid cure properties were utilized in returning areas to service quickly. MMA resins cure in less than 1 hour even in freezing conditions.
The system is also very robust and has excellent wearing properties, even in very busy car parks such as Livery Street.

The project consists of a brand new MSCP for pharmaceutical company Lonza, who due to expanding their facilities on the Slough Estate require additional staff parking. Huber is providing a bespoke structure using their modular system that utilises galvanised steel frame, permanent metal decking with in-situ concrete.
tremco illbruck’s CP Urethane system was specified for the roof deck while the MMA Internal System was specified for the intermediate decks. By being able to offer a range of products, tremco illbruck were able to meet the client’s requirements of a fast track application with products that have a proven track record. The system was enhanced by tremco illbruck’s many years of experience within the waterproofing market and the ongoing site and technical support that we offer.
While on site, the project was hit with many weeks of bad weather which resulted in the concrete slab getting wet. To prevent the systems being applied to a wet slab which could ultimately result in a failure, tremco illbruck attended the site regularly along with the site manager and specialist waterproofing applicator to make sure that the slab had reached the correct moisture content level before work could start again.

TREMCO MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System was carefully chosen for use on the Quayside Tower, Birmingham.
Contractors Presteck UK Ltd, selected the system on balance of previous track record, the existing relationship that they have with tremco illbrook and the cost advantages of using this system. The major benefits of the MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System are that curing time can be as little as 30 minutes in ideal conditions and it can be applied at very low temperatures, making it an ideal product for the UK’s unpredictable weather. The advantages of using the MMA System for the contractor were that it could be applied during the cold winter months whilst still facilitating the fast track installation that was required.
The car park suffered from detailing problems at the interface with the building and at large construction joints but tremco illbrook were able to help resolve these issues with the use of CP365, a new product recently added to the range.
As a result of an existing relationship, the contractors were aware that tremco illbrook Technical Services Department would be available to assist throughout the construction process. With Quayside Towers, the Technical Services Department provided detailed instruction and support for use of the new product at the problematic detailing.

tremco illbruck products were specified on the existing 1960’s structure in Wrexham. The car park had been built without a waterproofing layer and as a result was allowing water to leak through the structure and was in need of renovation.
The car park needed to stay open during the refurbishment and therefore the contractor specified tremco illbruck’s MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System for the roof deck as a result of its rapid drying properties. Once the product has been applied it can be walked on within 4 hours, allowing contractors PBM/SEE to complete the roof deck swiftly whilst causing minimal disruptions to customers. An added benefit of this system is that it can be applied in cold conditions and does not need to be reactivated if it gets rained on, making it an ideal choice of product for projects that are having the waterproofing layer applied during the winter months.
tremco illbruck are on NCP’s preferred product list and as the contractor had used the system on past projects, they were confident specifying it for the refurbishment of St Marks Car Park. TREMCO’s technical service department were on site to support the contractor and as part of this free service, moisture and pull off tests were carried out.

St Stephens MSCP is a 260 space car park situated in Norwich city centre and popular with shoppers and businesses.
The roof deck waterproofing was suffering from degradation and was allowing water ingress to the parking deck below. NCP contracted their Framework Contractor PBM to carry out the works. The works included removal of the waterproofing in the drive aisles and the installation of an MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System. In the parking bays the existing polyurethane based system which was not badly degraded was over-coated with a new polyurethane system to provide a further 10 year life. New line marking was installed to the whole car park as part of the works.

Castle Hill School had been derelict for some time and required refurbishment works to upgrade the existing building to ensure that it met with current building regulations and to provide a modern learning environment.
Roofing contractor Hardisty CRN were appointed to carry out the upgrade to the existing roof and they sought advice from tremco illbruck. After a close inspection of the roof by both an Area Sales Manager and a Technical Service Representative, TREMCO’s Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing Membrane was recommended.
The existing felt roofing system on the flat roofs was retained as a vapour control layer and insulation layers were installed to upgrade the U values to meet current standards and then the Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing was installed to provide a 20 year solution.
TREMCO’s rapid curing system offers a number of benefits over conventional liquid waterproofing systems including it’s compatibility to most forms of construction and surfaces without the need for extensive preparation. The system can be applied with or without a carrier membrane, can be applied directly to TREMCO approved insulation boards and the system is rapid curing with a walk on time of just 1 h
The location of Castle Hill School meant that the area was quite exposed and when combined with the months of installation, the likelihood that they system would be applied in marginal weather conditions was high. Unlike other types of liquid applied systems, the Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System has a curing time of just 30 minutes and as both layers chemical fuse together, the need for reactivation is eliminated, saving both time and money on site.

The roof terrace of Grundy Park Leisure Centre adjoins a bar area and is accessed by two sets of double doors and provides an amenity area that is popular in good weather. The existing asphalt waterproofing was overlaid with paving and featured planters and benches. Unfortunately there was an on-going problem of water leaking to offices and leisure areas below.
Morgan Sindall were appointed to carry out the refurbishment works at the leisure centre and Cemplas were contracted to install the waterproofing. Mace architects had recommended tremco illbruck as the waterproofing provider following a CPD seminar where further discussions were initiated.
Throughout the project, tremco illbruck worked closely with all parties involved to ensure the best system possible was used for the project. It was essential that the system provided a membrane and a finish to replace the existing slabs, that would colour match with other surfaces and be able to provide a hard wearing surface. The system that tremco illbruck recommended offered the guaranteed waterproofing of the Repoma Rapid Cure System and the wearing properties of the MMA Flexible System. Both systems are based on Rapid Cure MMA technology, modified with polyurethane to create TREMCO’s unique PUMA technology. The project had to be completed during marginal weather conditions but the rapid curing benefits of the system in conjunction with Cemplas’ experience of applying the product meant that this was not a problem.

The courtyard of the Old Admiralty Building is a landscaped area linking OAB with Horseguards Parade. The surfacing of resin-bound aggregate on asphalt was allowing water ingress to the area below which houses emergency power generation and supply controls serving much of the Whitehall office building estate. Previous attempts to solve this by re-surfacing had not been successful.
Jon Evans of Heritage Surveys was tasked by the F&CO with getting to grips with the problem. His solution centred on stripping the existing surfacing and applying a bonded, elastomeric membrane to the slab. The surfacing would have to be compatible with being overlaid with bituminous surfacing. Following discussions with manufacturers Jon specified TREMCO CP250 Liquid-Applied Waterproof Membrane which had been successfully used on a number of similar projects in London.
The project was tendered and the successful contractor, Triton Building Restoration carried out the works in Summer 2011. A temporary roof was installed to protect the naked structure following removal of the surfacing and the work was carried out in 2 phases to allow access through the courtyard. Logistical challenges due to the location adjacent to Trafalgar Square were met and overcome.
Specialist applicator Cemplas installed the waterproofing which is an advanced single-pack moisture-curing polyurethane system that requires no primer and can be applied in one layer to damp concrete. It cures rapidly and the following day can be integrity tested by low-voltage electronic testing. This is crucial in checking for defects in the membrane, and once successfully completed everyone can be confident that the system can be buried without fears of having to come back and dig areas up to repair leaks. Testing was carried out by Thornton Consulting as the areas were completed. Following testing, CP620 Heavy Duty Protection was laid on top of the waterproofing and areas were handed over to the main contractor.
Bituminous surfacing was installed to restore the correct levels and provide a base for the new resin bound surfacing which is chosen to match the gravel surfacing of Horseguards Parade.

The property comprises mixed use residential and business units over shops. The roof is existing asphalt which was refurbished some years ago with a built up felt system which was applied onto a recovery board. Whilst the felt appeared to be in good condition, the client was experiencing leaks to the properties below and there was evidence of water ingress to the recovery board which was breaking up and causing the felt to be unstable.
Following a small project on the asphalt access balcony which proved the ability of the Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System to remediate an asphalt substrate with a rapid turn-around, the decision was taken to award the remedial measures to the roof to specialist applicator, Cemplas who would use TREMCO’s Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System.
The felt and recovery board were removed to reveal the asphalt below, which had stone chippings embedded in the surface and was the reason why a recovery board had been employed previously. The removal of the stone chippings entailed extensive preparation of the asphalt to achieve a reasonably smooth, level surface suitable for the Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System.
The project was carried out in marginal weather conditions and was successfully waterproofed including detailing to skylights, pipes, vents, outlets and numerous other potential problem areas. The liquid applied system copes easily with any such detailing in contrast to single-ply and other sheet systems which are compromised.

TREMCO’s MMA Rapid Cure External Decking system has recently been used on a prestigious Grade 2 listed building.

Falkner Terrace is a residential property and the client was looking for a decorative wearing coating that could be applied in front of a number of doorways. The coating needed to provide a non-slip surface and offer a finish that was sympathetic to the buildings character.

TREMCO recommended its MMA Rapid Curing External Decking System and provided samples to the client to demonstrate both the colour and finish of the system. The client, Keepmoat selected TREMCO’s system as they could choose from a range of standard surface finish colours to blend with the existing streetscape. A further consideration for this project was that the application period was during the colder, wetter months, meaning that a rapid curing system was essential.

With a curing time of just 4 hours,TREMCO’s range of MMA systems are ideally suited to projects that require a fast turnaround, even at low temperatures. In the case of Falkner Terrace, it meant that the work could be carried out to 16 properties without causing inconvenience and the entrance could be restored to use the same day.

TREMCO’s local area sales manager and technical services team worked with the client to establish not only which system was best suited to this project but to also understand which surface finish colour would be most appropriate to ensure that the entrance remained in keeping with the existing buildings character.
